If there’s one coffee accessory that gets overlooked, it’s the trusty coffee scoop. You may not know it, but the best coffee scoop can make all the difference. So put away the spoons and flimsy plastic scoops that come with ground coffee. I’m about to give you the lowdown on how to find the best coffee spoon for your morning coffee!
The Best Coffee scoop at a Glance
Amidst a sea of cheap plastic spoons that wouldn’t last a year, I’ve compiled a list of the best coffee spoons currently on the market. I’ll get into the details below, but if you don’t mind spoilers, here are my top picks at a glance:
What Makes a Good Coffee scoop?
I think it’s safe to say that there’s no shortage of coffee spoons for everyone. If you buy ground coffee from certain brands, you may find yourself accumulating plastic coffee spoons like loose change. Even if you have a coffee grinder at home and use your own storage container, you’ll find the same thin plastic spoons on the coffee shelves of most grocery stores.
However, not all coffee spoons are of the same quality. While I appreciate the convenience of the plastic spoons that come with them, most of them aren’t durable. They’re designed to be disposable, which means they’ll end up in the landfill for much longer than they will in your kitchen.
That being said, it’s almost always better to upgrade to a good coffee spoon that doesn’t come in a can. What makes a good coffee spoon? Well, there are a few features that separate the best coffee spoons from the mediocre ones.
On the one hand, clear measurements on the coffee spoon are essential. With any type of brewing method, especially pour-over, you need the right ratio of coffee to water. If you add too little coffee, you’ll end up with a diluted drink that barely tastes like anything. If you drink too much coffee, the result will be too bitter for the stomach.
While the exact measurements will depend on your preferences and the number of cups you make, the easiest way to measure ground coffee is with tablespoons, so you’ll want to make sure your coffee measuring spoon holds at least 1 tablespoon (10 grams).
Besides measurements, material matters too. As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not the biggest fan of plastic measuring spoons. Actually, I’m not a fan of plastic. Environmental concerns aside, stainless steel and wooden measuring spoons last much longer.
The 6 Best Measuring Coffee scoops
Thought I was going to leave out a list of the best measuring spoons for coffee? Of course not! Here are my six favorite coffee measuring spoons that will revolutionize your morning cup of joe.
Izelokay Coffee Measuring Spoons
With a 1 tablespoon (10 grams) capacity, you’ll never have to guess how much coffee you’ve put in your coffee filter. This measurement is clearly marked on the handle, so you don’t have to worry about confusing anyone else.
I wasn’t kidding about the durability of this spoon. It’s made of sturdy stainless steel that’s unlikely to break or melt like plastic spoons do. Additionally, the design features an opening at the end of the handle. This allows you to hang this spoon on a kitchen hook along with your other tools and always have it handy for easy access.
If you’re worried about cleanliness, there’s no reason to be. I doubt you’ll need to do more than rinse this spoon thoroughly. Still, you can always throw it in the dishwasher if needed.
The Izelokay may not be as flashy as some coffee spoons you’ll find online, but it’s hard to go wrong with polished stainless steel. At least it’s sure to match almost any kitchen decor!
Apace Living coffee scoop
Maybe silver and gold don’t catch your eye, but how about rose gold? I can’t be the only one who thinks the color looks striking on this coffee spoon from Apace Living. If this spoon seems a bit expensive at $13.99, it’s because you’re actually getting a set of two. So you get twice the effort, twice the fun… twice the coffee-picking power?
As pretty as these spoons are, they’re still made of stainless steel. That means you don’t have to sacrifice durability or sturdiness for a pair of stylish coffee spoons. Each spoon holds 2 tablespoons (20 grams), which is pretty generous. If you often make large pots of coffee, you’ll appreciate the extra capacity.
The ergonomic handle is small enough to fit in a coffee can, so you may not need to store these spoons separately. My only criticism of the handle is that you might have trouble getting it stuck in the bottom of some bags or containers. If you’re pumping out the last bit of coffee and every inch counts, that short handle probably won’t do you any favors.
Still, I wouldn’t say it’s a deal breaker. In any case, the manufacturer promises a risk-free purchase with a full refund, so if you don’t like the design, you can always change your mind.
Coffee scoop from the Marrakesh collection by Baltique
In this coffee spoon, stainless steel has been replaced with birch wood stained with a colorful pattern. As part of this brand’s Marrakesh collection, these colors aren’t random either. The pattern is meant to symbolize the bustling markets of Marrakesh, Morocco.
In other words, this coffee spoon brings a piece of international culture to your home in the most vibrant and colorful way possible.
Although I think the colorful birch wood is the best feature of this coffee spoon, there are other things to appreciate about the utensil. For example, the design ensures that dirt doesn’t build up, so you’ll spill less coffee grounds when you use it to make coffee.
Speaking of spills and mess, I wouldn’t be so quick to put this spoon in the dishwasher. You run the risk of damaging this beautiful design if you submerge it in water. Instead, this spoon requires a much gentler touch: a damp cloth and a little hand washing will do the trick.
As for the capacity, the spoon holds 1 tablespoon (10 grams). It would be handy if the measurement was marked on the spoon, but I doubt it would cause much confusion.
GoodCook Extendable Coffee scoop
It may not be as durable as stainless steel or wood, but this coffee spoon has an edge over the competition (or rather, handle). This spoon has an extendable handle that you won’t find on the competition.
This extendable handle goes a long way (pun intended) in making this utensil more functional. When you need to scrape the last few grains from the bottom of the bag, you can remove the handle to make the spoon longer. When you want to put the spoon away, you can push the handle back in, making the spoon small enough to fit in the container.
In other words, you get the best of both worlds with this coffee spoon. It’s small enough to fit in the bag with your coffee, but long enough to use.
And if you’re wondering about the capacity, this is one of the largest spoons on the list, holding 2 tablespoons (20 grams).
Vote for Growth Gold Coffee scoop
This may be a disappointment to some, but the price of stainless steel still gives the impression of luxury. Speaking of the material, the spoon is made of food-grade stainless steel, which means it is suitable for all types of food preparation and storage, including measuring coffee grounds.
Aside from that, the most notable feature of this 1 tablespoon (10 grams) coffee spoon is its handle, which also serves as a bag clip or alligator clip. Don’t worry, despite the name, this spoon won’t bite!
The alligator clip allows you to attach the spoon to your bag of coffee beans or coffee grounds for easy storage. Not only is this convenient, but it can also seal the bag and keep food fresh. Check out my post on storing coffee beans if you want to learn more about why this is important!
If you’re like most home baristas, you want to keep your coffee beans as fresh as possible, and this coffee spoon gives you another way to achieve that.
Easyworkz Retro Coffee scoop
The spoon, which costs $15.99, is made of stainless steel in a stunning rose gold color, while the handle is made of black walnut wood. Even if you have no interest in collecting retro utensils or gadgets, it’s hard to deny the high quality of craftsmanship.
And if rose gold isn’t your thing, you might want to check out other color options for this coffee spoon, like brushed gold and bronze. Personally, I really love this bronze spoon.
Color options aside, you can rest assured that you’re getting polished steel and a black walnut wood handle no matter which spoon you choose.
The stainless steel finish isn’t just pretty to look at, by the way. You don’t have to worry about the steel cracking, rusting, or corroding from excessive use.
Combined with the wooden handle, the Easyworkz spoon is lighter and more comfortable to use. As you might expect, the capacity of this spoon is 1 tablespoon (10 grams), so you shouldn’t have any problem getting an accurate measurement.
How to Clean Coffee Scoops?
I couldn’t finish my best coffee scoop guide without telling you how to clean these utensils. As you can probably guess, there is no one-size-fits-all cleaning procedure for all coffee spoons. Some coffee spoons, especially wooden ones, may have specific instructions for washing by hand. Other spoons are easy to clean by putting them in and out of the dishwasher.
Whether or not your spoon is dishwasher safe, I’m always a big fan of washing it by hand. Not only is it gentler on the utensil, but it’s also more precise. There’s no guarantee that your dishwasher will remove all coffee oil residue like hand washing will.
While it may require a few extra steps, cleaning your coffee spoons by hand isn’t as complicated a task. All you need is some water, a damp cloth, and a mild detergent. Using the damp cloth, you should clean the spoon. It is important to clean the handle and small crevices of the spoon. Ultimately, however, your focus should be on removing any residue from the spoon itself.
Once you are done cleaning the spoon, you can wipe off any remaining moisture with a dry cloth. After that, all you need to do is let the spoon air dry, which is the most time-consuming part of this process. However, metal and plastic spoons dry much faster than solid wood coffee spoons.
However, if you can bear the wait, cleaning and maintaining your coffee spoon will be enough. It is not much different from maintaining other utensils, and if you are used to cleaning drip coffee makers or espresso machines, it will be a breeze!
Which scoop is right for you?
There is only one question left to answer: what is the best coffee scoop for you? While I can’t tell you which of these coffee spoons is the right choice for your lifestyle, I can tell you that they work much better than the disposable plastic spoons that come with ground coffee.
Whether you like colorful birch wood, stainless steel, or retro styles, we guarantee you’ll be serving your coffee in style!
